Garmin HR monitor - not working properly, not using it right, or affected by the cold?

I've borrowed a HR monitor from a friend, who has upgraded, and running a similar route and pace over several days I'm getting different results - well, different enough to seem abnormal. Am I using it wrong, are they prone to being inconsistent at times, or are they maybe affected by the cold?

The only time I’ve had inconsistencies from any of my chest straps have been when I’ve had loose flappy tops. There is also a material type that can cause issues, but I cannot remember what it is. Finally how old is the battery, if it’s getting towards the end of its life it could effect the readings.

Normally my chest strap HR is very good.

Thanks. I never thought to check the battery, I just assumed it would have a good one, but I'll replace it to rule it out.
